80th Anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising

On August 1, 1944, at 5:00 PM, the Warsaw Uprising began. The goal of the Uprising was to liberate Warsaw from German occupation in the face of the approaching Red Army. It was a display of heroic resistance by the Poles and the Underground State not only against the Germans, but also against Soviet policy. The Warsaw Uprising – a heroic act of the Polish Underground State and the people of Warsaw – was the largest battle of World War II fought against the German occupiers. During the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising, the Germans committed numerous crimes against the Insurgents and the people of Warsaw. It is worth mentioning, among others, the massacre of the residents of Wola. At that time, the Germans murdered between 40,000 to 60,000 inhabitants of this Warsaw district.

The insurgent forces numbered around 50,000 soldiers. The German forces were supported by armor, artillery, and aviation. It is worth mentioning that the Germans, expecting resistance, began developing plans to suppress the uprising as early as 1939.

Today, full of admiration for the heroism of the Insurgents, we remember their sacrifice and express our gratitude for their dedication to the Motherland. The Warsaw Insurgents will remain an unparalleled example of patriotism and dedication to Poland for us.
